Visiting with your family?

We know visiting a new church can be daunting, especially with kids. Here’s a helpful guide for what to expect if you visit on a Sunday morning:

What to Expect

First Baptist is a faith community where kids are welcomed and encouraged to be themselves in all the ways God created them to be. Our worship service starts at 10:30 am, and all children are welcome to participate in worship. During the service, there will be a Children’s Message where children of all ages are invited up to the front of the church for a message about the sermon text that is geared toward them. Parents are more than welcome to join their children up front, or children can go by themselves. After the Children’s Message, children who are either preschoolers or toddlers may choose to go to the Playroom in the Education Building, where they will have the chance to play with other kids their age. Elementary children remain in worship for the entirety of the service. Worship Bags are available in the Narthex for all children to use as aids to worship.

When Things Start

We offer Sunday School from 9:15 am to 10:15 am in the Education Building. During this time, our Nursery is open for children ages six weeks to 2 years old. Our PreK classroom is open for children 2-5 years old. Both of these classrooms are located on the first floor of the Education Building. The Nursery is located next to the Park Avenue side Stairwell, and the PreK room is in Room 107. Elementary Sunday School is located on the second floor of the Education Building. All Elementary schoolers start together for the first half of Sunday School, then break into Small Groups. Kindergarten through 2nd-grade children are in one classroom, and 3rd through 5th-grade children are in the other. The Large Group Gathering Room is in Room 205. The K-2nd Small Group is located in Room 2… and the 3rd-5th Small Group is located in Room 2… Worship begins at 10:30 am in the Sanctuary. Children are welcome to grab a worship bag from the Narthex at the start of worship, and they may keep it with them until the end of worship. If your child goes with the Preschool children to the Playroom, you may pick your child up there after church. the Playroom is in Room 105. Worship usually ends around 11:30 am. On Sunday Nights, we have a churchwide Dinner from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Dinner is six dollars per person or twenty dollars per family. Starting at 6:00 pm, we have Bible Study for Adults and Programming for our children and youth. From 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm, our Elementary children go to the Senior Adult Area for Bible Study and Activities. Meanwhile, our Preschool children go to the PreK room for Music. From 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm, our Elementary Children go to Children’s Choir in the Music Room located next to the Sanctuary, and the Preschool children remain in their classroom for playtime. All programming ends at 7:00 pm. Parents will pick up their children from the PreK room and/or the Music Room.

Children's Participation in Worship

All Children are invited to worship in whatever way the Holy Spirit moves them. We provide Worship Scarves in the Narthex for children to use as a way of worship, whether that is through dance or other movement. We also have Worship Bags in the Narthex that are full of worship aids and activities to help children focus on what they are hearing and seeing in worship. Children are always invited to come up front on the chancel for the Children’s Message. The Children’s Message is a few minutes in worship that is directed specifically toward the kids. We will talk about the Scripture Passage of the day and explain it in a way that makes sense for children.  On the first Sunday of every month, First Baptist takes communion as a way to regularly remember Jesus’ love and sacrifice for us. At First Baptist, we have an open table for communion. This means people of all backgrounds and ages are able to participate in communion with the larger church community. We let the parents decide when their children start taking communion but, we always extend the bread and the cup to everyone.  When it comes to Baptism, there is no age limit for children. If children are interested in being baptized, they will have conversations with Pastor Taylor, where she will ask them questions about what Baptism means to them and why they want to get baptized. When the parents, child, and pastor believe they are ready, we will schedule a date for baptism.
